His Eminence visits His Beatitude Metropolitan Jonah, of the Orthodox Church in America
On Thursday, August 13, 2009, Mor Cyril Aphrem Karim, accompanied by Very Rev. John Meno, Ecumenical Officer of the Archdiocese, visited His Beatitude Metropolitan Jonah, Archbishop of Washington and New York and Metropolitan of All America and Canada of the Orthodox Church in America, at the headquarters of the OCA in Syosset, New York. In addition to His Eminence, Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, Primate of the Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church of America and Chairman of th Standing Conference of the Oriental Orthodox Churches in America, was present together with clergy of the Coptic Orthodox Church, representing His Grace Bishop David of the Coptic Archdiocese of North America. The occasion of the visit was to congratulate Metropolitan Jonah on his election as Primate of the Orthodox Church in America. Both Archbishop Khajag and His Eminence addressed His Beatitude, assuring him of the warmest wishes and prayers of their respective jurisdictions. His Eminence Archbishop Karim stressed the growing spirit of cooperation between both Eastern and Oriental Orthodox Churches in the United States, and most especially regarding the Orthodox Church in America. Gifts were exchanged with Mor Cyril Aphrem presenting Metropolitan Jonah with a set of the “Hidden Pearl” videos and companion volumes. A luncheon followed during which all present shared in warm and fraternal conversation regarding common challenges facing both families of Orthodoxy, expressing the hope that brotherly cooperation and mutual understanding may continue to grow in the hope of eventual full communion between both Orthodox families.
