St. Aphrem’s Feast Celebrated in Washington D.C.
On the Eve of the Feast of St. Aphrem the Syriac, February 20-21st, His Eminence Mor Cyril Aphrem Karim paid a pastoral visit to the Parish of St. Aphrem in the Washington D.C. area.
On Saturday evening the celebration started with a lecture on St. Aphrem’s hymns and poems. The lecture was delivered by Fr. Sidney Griffith, a professor of Syriac and Oriental studies at the Catholic University of America. Fr. Griffith was introduced by Mr. Jay Ghazal, a member of the Board of the Parish. The lecture was followed by a session of questions and answers. At the conclusion of the event, His Eminence thanked Fr. Griffith for his enlightening remarks concerning the life and teachings of St. Aphrem. His Eminence congratulated the parish on organizing such blessed events in connection with the feast of the parish patron saint. Lenten desserts and refreshments were served at the end of the program.
On the morning of Sunday the 21st His Eminence celebrated the Holy Qurbono assisted by the Parish priest, the Very Rev. Fr. Fadi Abdulahad and the deacons of the Church. During the Service, His Eminence delivered a sermon on the importance of St. Aphrem in the Church, drawing attention to the relevance of St. Aphrem’s teachings for today’s believers.
After the sermon a beautiful ordination service was conducted at St. Aphrem’s church for the first time.
