Barbaric Massacre of Christians in an Iraqi Church
We are shocked by the terrible news we received lately from Iraq.
A group of terrorists attacked some peaceful Christians while praying in the Syrian Catholic Church of Our Lady of Deliverance, in Baghdad. Such a barbaric act reveals how low human nature can reach, when hatred of others takes control of people’s lives. It looks like the martyrs’ only fault was their faith, and their choice in staying in their ancestral land. All this happened under the watchful eyes of the super powers of the world and the Iraqi Government and armed forces.
We pray for the repose of the martyrs’ souls, and for a speedy recovery of the many wounded victims and their families. May the Merciful Lord keep them in His care and make them worthy of the blessing He promised in His Holy Gospel: “Blessed are you when men shall revile you and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.” (Matthew 5:11)
We appeal to the United States Administration, the Iraqi government, and all decision makers to do all they can to protect Christians in Iraq who should enjoy the full privileges and rights as equal citizens with respect and dignity, in a county which was enriched by Christian contributions throughout the centuries.
