A Social Hour with the Archdicesan Executive Council
His Eminence Mor Cyril Aphrem Karim, on the joyful occasion of Christmas, hosted a Meet and Greet Social Hour for members of the Boards of Trustees and individuals who have been working diligently in their respective parishes and the Archdiocese as a whole. The event was held December 28th at the main hall of the Midland Avenue Archdiocesan Complex.
The primary purpose of the gathering was for His Eminence to thank everyone for the outstanding work they have done, and continue to do in the service of our Holy Church, and at the same time, introduce the newly organized Archdiocesan Executive Council to all those present.
Elias Sarkar, Chairman of Public Relations, opened the program with a word of welcome and briefly elaborated on the purpose and structure of the social event. He then presented Emily Nakkash who performed two Christmas songs, one in Syriac and the other in English. At this point, the Master of Ceremonies introduced our beloved Archbishop, Mor Cyril Aphrem Karim.
His Eminence initially spoke about the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and the true meaning of the season. He extended his wishes to the whole Archdiocese for a blessed Christmas and a healthy and prosperous New Year. His Eminence continued by thanking all those present for the wonderful job they are doing serving their parishes, each in his or her own capacity. His Eminence said, “I thank all of you from the bottom of my heart for the good work you are doing. I know it’s not easy. Every one of you sacrifices so much by giving of your valuable time and resources to serve your church. You are the individuals that make all the difference. You have made our Archdiocese what it is today.” His Eminences went on to emphasize the need to prepare our youth for the service of the Church by getting them involved and giving them serious responsibilities. At this juncture His Eminence presented Mr. Semir Sirazi and acknowledged the Sirazi Foundation for the support they have given the Archdiocese and its projects. He also acknowledged Ms. Sandy Ghattas for her tireless efforts in working with the Archdiocesan web site. He invited her to say a few words about a work in progress and a collaboration of efforts on the publication of children stories to be used in Syriac homes for our new young generation of parents raising a Syriac Orthodox family. Ms. Ghattas explained that the author is His Eminence and the first book, entitled In the Tree House is expected to be available in 2011.
At this point in the program His Eminence spoke about the Archdiocesan Executive Council and introduced Dr. Yamo Deniz, Council President, to say a few words. Dr. Yamo reviewed the accomplishments of the council over the past six month and emphasized the improved lines of communications that have come about. He acknowledged the wonderful work Sonia Adamo, Council Secretary is doing in this regard. The council meets monthly and is focusing its efforts on re-vitalizing the youth efforts in the Archdiocese with John Samuel spearheading the initiative. He spoke about the committee structure of the council with the four standing committees being the Finance Committee, with Jack Darakjy as Chairman, Building Committee, with Bessim Isik, as Chairman, Parish and Clergy Committee, with Sait Samuel as Chairman and Public Relations and Communication Committee with Elias Sarkar as Chairman. Dr. Yamo highlighted the upcoming Februarty 5th face to face meeting with Board of Trustees Presidents and encouraged all to take part. In closing he thanked Samira Yunan, Biniamin Malki and Elias Sarkar for coordinating the evening’s program.
Over 150 guests attended the event including Very Rev. John Khoury, Very Rev. Fr. Shamoun Asmar, Rev. Fr. Aziz Hadodo and Rev. Fr. Joseph Chamoun.
