AEC meeting of 9/7/2011

The Archdiocesan Executive Counsel held its regular monthly meeting with its new three year term members on Wednesday evening, September 7, 2011 at the Archdiocesan Complex in Teaneck, New Jersey.

Immediately after the opening prayers, the new members present were sworn in by His Eminence Mor Cyril Aphrem Karim. The Archbishop and Dr. Yamo Deniz, Counsel President, congratulated the new members and asked them to use their talents to serve our Holy Church and the entire Archdiocese. The new three year term members include Orhan Abaci, Sabri Akman, Janine Azar, Pierre Ghazal, Samuel Murad, Farid Salci, Semir Sirazi and Nuran Tasci.

In his opening remarks, His Eminence Mor Cyril Aphrem Karim covered five important issues requiring immediate attention from the Counsel. The Archbishop cited the necessary amendments to the Parish By-Laws highlighting the sense of urgency centering on this process and initiative. He also cited that final approvals of permits with the Borough of Paramus are due this month, after which work can commence on the Midland Avenue property. His Eminence also pledged to continuing working on fulfilling the need for a Youth Minister for the Archdiocese. The Archbishop also noted that as a result of the 48th Annual Archdiocesan Convention, the call for re-visiting the entire convention concept and purpose will be honored and a committee from participating dioceses will be named to do a comprehensive study and deliver a report at the 49th Annual Convention in Washington DC next year.

His Eminence Mor Cyril Aphrem Karim concluded by talking about the scheduling conflict that presently exists between the timing of the Holy Liturgy and the timing of Sunday School Classes. He said, because of this, our children do not get to attend the Holy Liturgy and remain deprived of this important experience. To remedy this situation, letters were sent to all the parishes to have the children attend the Holy Liturgy with their parents, and immediately after the dispensation of the Holy Communion, have the children proceed to Sunday School and attend classes through the duration of the Holy Liturgy and the Social Hour afterwards.

Reports were given by Elias Sarkar, Chairman of the Public Relation and Communications Committee on the 2011 Archbishop’s Appeal Kick Off campaign. Sait Samuel, 48th Annual Convention Chair, gave a brief account of the Convention results and financials. Bessim Isik, Building Committee Chair, gave on update on the Midland Avenue property repairs and expenditure and Jack Darakjy, Chairman of the Finance Committee, gave a financial update to the Counsel. Very Rev. Fr. Chamoun Asmar reported on the success of the Summer Youth Camp and on the continued education program established for the clergy of the Archdiocese.

His Eminence concluded the meeting with a closing prayer, blessed and thanked everyone for attending and wished all the new members success as they begin their work on the Counsel.
