November Meeting of the AEC
The Archdiocesan Executive Council held its monthly meeting on Wednesday evening, November 9th at the Archdiocesan Complex in Teaneck, New Jersey. His Eminence Mor Cyril Aphrem Karim opened the meeting with a prayer after which he covered his recent trip to Armenia where he attended the consecration of six Bishops, two from New York, with whom he collaborated and worked with over the years. His Eminence’s Ecumenical initiatives have put our Syriac Orthodox Church in the forefront in this arena, always encouraging continued dialogue and mutual understanding.
His Eminence also reported on the “Bible Reading Week” which took place from October 30th to November 5th. The Archbishop invited Very Rev. Shamoon Asmar to elaborate. Fr. Asmar explained that this was one of the projects which came out of the Clergy Meetings held during the past Archdiocesan Convention. Numerous preparatory meetings and discussions were held to insure its success. He concluded saying the response, interest and feedback is very encouraging for the sponsorship of future initiatives of this nature.
His Eminence also reported that in conjunction with the Western Archdiocese, Parables & Books Publishing has been commissioned to begin assembling the necessary literature, illustrations and subject matter to professionally put forth the publication of our complete Sunday School Curriculum. This is a three year initiative which will cover all Sunday School levels.
Dr. Yamo Deniz, AEC President thanked His Eminence for the update and turned to the Midland Avenue Property and the need to revisit this projects committees and their structure. Potential duplication of effort would necessitate some committee consolidations. Dr. Deniz requested a job description for the possible position of a Project Manager who will be the Archdiocesan representative during the renovation and construction phases of the project. It was also reported that testimony could not be completed at the November hearing of the Paramus Board of Adjustments and was postponed until the next scheduled meeting in January 2012.
Sait Samuel and Elias Sarkar reported that the 2011 Archbishop’s Appeal has been sent out to the entire Archdiocese with a number of responses having already been received.
Also in attendance was the Rev. Fr. Alan Shaltan, Pastor of St. Ephraim Syriac Orthodox Church in Central Falls, Rhode Island who was welcomed by His Eminence our Archbishop.
