Pope Shenouda III Passes Away
It is with deep sorrow that we report the passing away of Pope Shenouda III, the head of the Coptic Orthodox Church, on Saturday, March 17, 2012. Hany Aziz, Pope Shenouda’s political advisor, reported the 117th Pope of Alexandria, passed away at the age of 89 “due to health complications and old age”.
He was ordained a monk in 1954 taking on the name Father Antonios el-Syriani. He was consecrated a Bishop in 1962 and enthroned as Pope of Alexandria in 1971.
His Eminence Mor Cyril Aphrem Karim, Archbishop of The Syriac Orthodox Archdiocese for the Eastern United States, extends his deepest heartfelt condolences to the world wide Coptic Orthodox Church, its hierarchy, clergy and congregants on the loss of their beloved Pope. We pray to our Heavenly Father to bless his soul and give him eternal rest in the heavenly Jerusalem. We also pray to the Almighty to watch over the Coptic Orthodox Church, our sister church, during these very difficult days.
