A response to Martin Luther King's Letter from Birmingham Jail
On Monday April 15 His Eminence Archbishop Mor Cyril Aphrem Karim signed a document representing the response of Christian Churches in the United States to a letter which the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote to eight clergymen from Birmingham, Alabama. He was responding to their request that he cancel the civil non-violence protests in support of the rights of African Americans who were suffering from racism and segregation laws.
The signing ceremony took place at St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Birmingham on the Fiftieth Anniversary of Dr. M. L. King’s letter. Several Church leaders representing different Christian traditions also signed the document. The signed document was then delivered to Rev. Dr. Bernice King, the youngest daughter of Rev. M. L. King. Also participating in the event were Dr. Virgil Wood, and Dr. Dorothy Cotton, both civil rights leaders who worked with Rev. King.
This initiative was sponsored and organized by Christian Churches Together in the USA. The Syriac Orthodox Church is a founding member of this broad Ecumenical organization.
