His Holiness received Sheikh Sami Merhi

On April 11, 2014 His Holiness Patriarch Ignatius Aphrem II received Sheikh Sami Merhi, Chairman of the Muwahdeen Druze Community in North America at the headquarters of the archdiocese. Mr. Merhi is the Secretary of the Standing Conference of Christian and Muslim Leaders in North America, of which His Holiness is a member.

“We congratulate His Holiness for his election to the Patriarchate of Antioch and we commend his affirmation that the Patriarchate See remains in Damascus,” said Mr. Merhi. “Christianity is the heart of the Middle East and one cannot remove the heart from its body” he added.

God’s Little Children Pre-School was buzzing with excitement while staff and 19 students waited for the arrival of His Holiness Moran Mor Ignatius Aphrem II to arrive. This is the first Archdiocese sponsored pre-school in the entire Eastern Archdiocese. His Holiness gave his blessing over 3 years ago to launch this project. Our first academic year, God willing the first of many to follow, has truly been a learning experience. The students have blossomed and learned so many things while preparing to enter Kindergarten. Paramus – NJ. On April 13, 2014, His Holiness Moran Mor Ignatius Aphrem II celebrated Palm Sunday Divine Liturgy at the Church of The Virgin Mary in Paramus, NJ. His Holiness was greeted at the entrance of the church and met by Very. Rev. Fr. John Khoury and the the Board of Trustees. On April 12, 2014 Author Cyril Aphrem Karim, now known as Patriarch Ignatius Aphrem II, read a few stories from his newest publication Animals from the Bible during The Annual Archdiocese Easter Egg Hunt at Church of the Virgin Mary in Paramus, New Jersey. He was accompanied by Very Rev Fr Corepiscopa Varkey Mundakkal, from the Malankara Archdiocese as well as Very Rev. Fr. John Khoury and Very Rev. Fr. Joseph Chamoun. On Tue April 15, 2014 His Holiness Moran Mor Ignatius Aphrem II was visited by His Eminence Archbishop Oshagan Choloyan, Prelate of the Armenian Prelacy in the Eastern USA, who was accompanied by His Grace Bishop Anoushavan Tanielian, Vicar General of the Prelacy. Special prayers on behalf of the abducted Archbishops of Aleppo, Syria

On April 22, 2014, His Holiness Mor Ignatius Aphrem II offered special prayers on behalf of the abducted Archbishops of Aleppo, Syria: Archbishop Mor Gregorius Youhanna Ibrahim & Archbishop Boulous Yazigi as well as the other kidnapped priests and lay people. The service was held at St. Mark’s Cathedral in Teaneck, New Jersey.

New US-based Syriac Patriarch says he will return to Syria

The Syriac Orthodox Church, one of the oldest churches in the world and seated in the heart of war-ravaged Syria, has selected a U.S.-based archbishop as its next patriarch.

Moran Mor Ignatius Aphrem II, a native of Syria, has been Metropolitan and Patriarchal Vicar to the Archdiocese of the Syriac Orthodox Church for the Eastern United States, based in New Jersey, since 1996. He was elevated Monday, March 31 during a private meeting of church archbishops in Beirut, Lebanon, following the March 21 death of Patriarch Zakka II.

An Important announcement from the Archdiocese Executive Council

Our beloved Archbishop Mor Cyril Aphrem was elected Patriarch of Antioch as Moran Mor Ignatius Aphrem II. His Holiness will be arriving this Saturday and we will be holding a prayer service to welcome him at 3:00 PM at St. Mark’s Cathedral.

Please note that due to airport security, no one is permitted to go to the airport apart from designated people. Please be at St. Mark’s Cathedral no later than 2:30 PM.

As parking is limited, please make all efforts to car pool.

“Accidental” meeting with future Patriarch

On a late January morning at the New Delhi airport in 2010, I was cursing my stars for the delay of flight to Bangalore because of the seasonal fog.

However, the delay led to one of the most unforgettable moments in my life. I had a meaningful interaction with — who else – Metropolitan Cyril Aphrem Karim, who became the 123rd Patriarch of the Syrian Orthodox Church on March 31.
